Leprosy Control Program (According to Annual Report 2075/76, DoHS, Nepal)
Ø 1960 AD: Leprosy survey in collaboration with WHO.
Ø 1966 AD: Pilot project launched with Dapsone monotherapy treatment.
Ø 1982 AD: MDT firstly introduced.
Ø For the treatment of leprosy patients, 2 institutions established – Khokhana leprosarium in 1875 AD andMalunga leprosarium in 1939 AD.
Ø 1987 AD: The integration of vertical Leprosy program into general basic health services.
Ø 1991 AD: National leprosy elimination goal was set.
Ø 1991/92 AD: Nepal started Adhoc plan for leprosy was implemented.
Ø 1995 AD: Focal Persons (TB & Leprosy Assistants) appointed for districts and regions.
Ø 1996 AD: MDT coverage had extended to 75 districts.
Ø Jan 1996 AD: first independent evaluation of the national leprosy control program by government, WHO and NGOs expert group.
Ø 19th Jan 2010 AD: Leprosy was declared to be eliminated from Nepal.
Ø 2009/10: Case holding in leprosy means ratio of prevalence to new case detection rate i.e. P/D at national level it is 0.66.
Ø 2011 AD: National Leprosy Strategy (2011-2015) was set.
Ø Establishment of disability prevention and rehabilitation focal unit (2014-2015).
Ø The ten years action plan on disability management (FY 2073-2082) is formulated.
Ø Vision: Leprosy free Nepal
Ø Goal: End the consequences of Leprosy including disability and stigma.
Ø Objectives
• To achieve elimination status in all districts by 2019 AD.
• To expand services for early detection of leprosy cases at health facility, especially in high prevalence districts.
• To strengthen case based reporting and surveillance by 2017 AD.
• To initiate post exposure Leprosy prophylaxis to family members and neighbors.
• To achieve the surveillance performance indicators.
